Unlike traditional fluid heads that have an arc in the tilt axis, Its "L" shape configuration allows the camera's lens axis to rotate on the nodal point of the tilt axis. Both pan and tilt movements are assisted by CARTONI patented continuous fluid drag units. On the Spin Head, these fluid drags are hollow in the center to provide a clean entry for cables to plug into the camera. The Spin Head can be mounted on a tripod, dolly, camera car, etc. but, here at Porta-jib, we feel its most effective use is when it is mounted underslung from a jib arm.
There are two features that sets this head apart: 1) it is the only head on the market that can be used in the underslung mode and handle cameras up to 40 lbs. (except for its big brother the Cartoni Lambda Head, of course, but this one is generally for cameras that are even heavier still), and 2) it is the only head that has a spinning tilt unit which offsets the camera by pivoting 360 degrees. This is especially helpful when mounted in the underslung mode, and when the camera being used has a long front -to-back profile. A long camera would not be able to tilt straight down. It would be obstructed because there is not enough clearance for the back of the camera to pass under the pan mechanism above . By swinging the head 180 degrees (as pictured below), the camera is free to rotate freely on the tilt axis without any obstruction.
